We love training Foster Dogs with Positive Reinforcement like dog treats. But if you’ve ever met a Lab, you know that sometimes a timely negative response to a bad behavior is necessary. Try a squirt bottle! Fill it water ONLY (lemon juice and vinegar are not necessary and may harm a dog’s eyes). Adjust it for the longest stream possible. When you catch your Foster Dog in the act of being naughty, give them a few squirts along with a verbal correction.

There are a number of reasons why a squirt bottle makes a good first choice for correcting bad behavior:

  1. It’s safe.

  2. It’s cheap.

  3. It allows you to use something other than your hand to get the dog’s attention. (You definitely don’t want to teach a dog that your hand is a negative thing!)
