This Saturday Peak Lab Rescue and the Petco Foundation are inviting the public to learn more about the lifesaving impact of fostering dogs. Peak Lab Rescue, the largest foster-based dog rescue in the state, saves Labs and Lab mixes from abuse, neglect, abandonment and high-kill shelters throughout North Carolina. In 2017, Peak Lab Rescue saved more than 850 dogs.

We love training Foster Dogs with Positive Reinforcement like dog treats. But if you’ve ever met a Lab, you know that sometimes a timely negative response to a bad behavior is necessary. Try a squirt bottle! Fill it water ONLY (lemon juice and vinegar are not necessary and may harm a dog’s eyes). Adjust it for the longest stream possible. When you catch your Foster Dog in the act of being naughty, give them a few squirts along with a verbal correction.
There are a number of reasons why a squirt bottle makes a good first choice for correcting bad behavior:
It allows you to use something other than your hand to get the dog’s attention. (You definitely don’t want to teach a dog that your hand is a negative thing!)
